Cape May’s Victorian houses look as though they’ve been waiting all year to get dressed for Christmas. Out come the garlands, on go the lights, and suddenly a walk around the block becomes the evening’s entertainment. Add a trolley ride, a good dinner and a little shopping, and you’ve got a holiday getaway with very little assembly required.

Bring the grandkids, round up a few friends or make it a trip for two. Here’s how to enjoy Cape May this holiday season.

Start with a little holiday glow

The Emlen Physick Estate gets the festivities going on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2026, with a craft show beginning at 4 p.m., a free community band concert at 5:30 p.m. and Santa lighting the tree at 7 p.m.

The house museum’s first floor will also welcome visitors for free, self-guided tours from 5 to 8 p.m. That’s a rather festive return on the price of admission. Get the tree-lighting details. Cape May MAC

All aboard for the lights

For sightseeing with a seat, try Cape May MAC’s Holiday Lights Trolley Ride. Christmas music and stories about holiday traditions accompany the trip through decorated historic streets. The trolleys are open-air, so bring the warm coat and scarf. Your feet will appreciate the break; your ears will appreciate the hat.

Taking the grandchildren? Santa’s Trolley Rides feature stories and songs with Mrs. Claus and a visit with Santa on the Physick Estate grounds. Book ahead, particularly for weekends. Explore holiday trolley rides. Holiday Tours & Events

Step inside those beautiful houses

Admiring a Victorian porch is lovely. Getting a look inside is even better.

The 2026 Christmas Candlelight House Tours take place Saturdays, Dec. 5, 12 and 19, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. These self-guided evenings welcome visitors into decorated homes, inns, churches and hotels throughout the Historic District.

Buy tickets early and allow time to collect your map and wristband at the Physick Estate. This is a walking outing, with stops spread around the neighborhood, so comfortable shoes deserve a place in your holiday wardrobe. Ask about steps and access before booking if anyone in your group has mobility concerns. Find candlelight tour details and tickets. Cape May MAC

Give Congress Hall a spot on the itinerary

Congress Hall’s Winter Wonderland runs Nov. 27–Dec. 31, 2026, bringing another helping of holiday cheer to this historic seaside hotel. Lights, seasonal shopping and family festivities make it a natural addition to a Cape May visit.

Check the daily schedule before promising the grandchildren a particular activity. They have an excellent memory for that sort of thing. See Congress Hall’s holiday lineup. Congress Hall Hotel

Shop a little. Stop a little.

Leave time for Washington Street Mall, where shops offer clothing, home goods, specialty gifts and plenty of browsing possibilities. There’s even a Christmas shop for anyone who believes the ornament collection still has room to grow. Explore the shops. Cape May, NJ

Make an afternoon of it: a few gifts, a warm drink and a stop to admire the windows. Buying something for yourself is allowed. Santa has a lot on his plate.

Make dinner part of the outing

Reserve dinner before you arrive, especially if you’re fitting a meal around a house tour. The Washington Inn is one option; Cape May MAC also offers Washington Inn dinner packages with its Dec. 12 and 19 candlelight tours, pairing a three-course meal at 4 p.m. with the evening outing. For an overnight visit, leave the next morning a little loose: breakfast, another look at the houses in daylight and perhaps a walk by the ocean, weather permitting. There’s no rule that every minute of a getaway needs a ticket.

Bring home a memory

Pick a few favorites and leave room for the unexpected window display, the extra cup of cocoa or the grandchild who wants one more look at the lights.

Years from now, the grandkids might not remember which Victorian house had the prettiest tree. But they may remember walking beside you, cocoa in hand, deciding that this should become an every-year thing.

Always double-check schedules, ticket availability and accessibility before heading out.
