Fall may bring an end to summer, but it doesn’t bring an end to farmers market season in New Jersey. Markets across the state continue well into November and December—and several remain open all year.

It’s a delicious time to shop. Depending on the week, you may find apples, pumpkins, squash, greens, mushrooms, local meats, fresh seafood, pies, cider, bread, cheese, honey and enough baked goods to make you forget you came for vegetables.

Farmers markets also offer an easy way to support local growers, bakers, artisans and small businesses. Here are New Jersey markets to explore this fall, organized by the days they operate.

Schedules, vendors and locations can change. Check the market’s website or social-media pages before heading out.

Make the Most of Your Farmers Market Visit

A little planning can make market day easier:

  • Bring reusable shopping bags and a small insulated bag for meat, dairy or seafood.

  • Carry some cash in small bills, even if many vendors accept cards.

  • Arrive early for the largest selection or later if you prefer smaller crowds.

  • Ask farmers how to store or prepare unfamiliar produce.

  • Check parking and accessibility information before leaving home.

  • Confirm the schedule in case of severe weather or a holiday.

  • Don’t skip the bakery table. This is less a tip than a philosophy.

New Jersey’s fall markets make it easy to eat with the seasons, discover local products and support the people who grow and make our food. Throw a tote bag in the car and see what looks good—the best farmers market purchases are often the ones that weren’t on the list.
