VA Clinic Named for Local WWII Hero Bud Lomell

TOMS RIVER — Ocean County’s new VA clinic on Hooper Avenue now proudly bears the name of hometown hero Leonard G. “Bud” Lomell, the Army Ranger who fought from D-Day through the Battle of the Bulge.

Lomell, celebrated for scaling cliffs at Pointe du Hoc and disabling German artillery, later earned the Silver Star during the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest. Historian Stephen Ambrose even credited him as “the single man most responsible for the success of the Normandy landings.”

Though Lomell passed in 2011 at 91, his courage and humility live on. The renaming — signed into law by the President — coincides with the 104th birthday of his widow, Charlotte.

“This clinic will stand as a place of healing and a lasting reminder of his bravery and sacrifice,” the Ocean County Commissioners said.

📍 Find it at 1051 Hooper Avenue, Toms River — opened in 2024 with expanded medical, mental health, and specialty care.

🍲What’s Cookin’

🍎 Sweet & Simple: Homemade Applesauce

Nothing says fall like the smell of apples simmering on the stove. Making applesauce with Jersey Fresh apples is as easy as it gets — and it’s a sweet way to spend time with the grandkids. Peel, chop, and let the apples bubble with a splash of water, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and just a touch of sugar (or none at all — Jersey apples are sweet enough!). The fun part? Let the little ones mash it up with a potato masher. It’s a hands-on kitchen adventure that ends with warm applesauce for dessert, snack time, or even spooned over pancakes. Get the recipe for Jersey Fresh Applesauce here.
